My fear with including in the core is some sites use rewrites that require the trailing slash, these sites produce 404 if the slash is missing. This mostly only applies to internal pages and not the root domain, but still not sure if this would be a good idea for the core.
yup, you can do this with a plugin to run the trim() function on the $TMPL['url'] variable. When I get a few free moments I will find the best hook location for you so we can spin up a plugin to handle this.
basti is correct, the real issue to worry about is a lack of actual content on the details pages.
But, to increase the meta description length, a few ideas:
Add some custom fields so you have more unique content to work with, then add some of those to your meta description tag on details...

Submit as the name of the submit button probably dates back to 2001 in Aardvark :) Good catch! Though as Basti says, the jquery validate plugin we use has no trouble with this but still... worthwhile fixing.
